About this position

An exciting fully funded PhD position is available in the field of experimental fluid dynamics, microfluidics, geophysics, and geosciences at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d’Orléans (ISTO), University of Orleans, France. The research focuses on the experimental investigation of residual trapping of organic contaminants (non-aqueous phase liquids, NAPLs) in subsurface environments using microfluidics, multiphase flows, and integrated geo-electrical measurements. The project aims to better understand the mechanisms of fluid trapping in porous media, which is crucial for environmental applications such as groundwater pollution, CO2 storage, and aquifer remediation.

The doctoral student will work on the Nanolab platform in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international research environment, collaborating closely with other PhDs, postdocs, and researchers. The main scientific objective is to quantify the role of snap-off (fragmentation of fluid into droplets at pore constrictions) in residual trapping and improve predictive models. The methodology combines microfluidics for geosciences, image analysis (micro-PIV), integrated geo-electrical measurements, and comparison with numerical models.

Applicants should have a master’s degree (or engineering school equivalent) in engineering, geosciences, physics, or fluid mechanics, with a strong interest in multiphase flows, microfluidics, and/or geophysical methods. Good writing skills and a strong motivation for laboratory research are required. The position is fully funded for 36 months, starting in October 2026.
