Erasmus University Rotterdam is offering a fully funded four-year PhD position focused on identifying sustainability transition conflicts through the study of citizen collectives (CCs) and their role in navigating societal tensions, polarization, and equity issues. The position is based at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) and is part of the ECCO consortium, which brings together 11 PhD projects across Dutch universities. The research will employ transdisciplinary methods, including ethnography and participatory action research, to analyze how CCs act as early detectors and mediators of societal tensions in the Netherlands. A key outcome will be the development of the 'Pluralizer Tool,' designed to help CCs foster transitions while addressing inherent conflicts.

The successful candidate will design and implement independent research, collect and analyze longitudinal data from multiple CCs, co-develop interventions, and collaborate with other PhD researchers. The project emphasizes academic publication, societal knowledge exchange, and practical impact.
