About this position

The Thin Films and Electrochemistry group at Laboratoire de Physique de la Matière Condensée (PMC), École Polytechnique, France, is offering a PhD position focused on the material-property relationship of layer-by-layer deposited thin films for electrochemical reactions. The research aims to advance the understanding of thin film deposition, particularly using atomic layer deposition (ALD), and its impact on electrocatalysis and electrochemical properties. The project covers the entire workflow from thin film preparation and optimization, through advanced characterization (e.g., electron microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy), to electrochemical assessment for applications such as water splitting and nitrogen reduction reactions.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team tackling challenges at the interface of condensed matter science and electrochemistry. The PhD student will be trained to become autonomous and will be involved in all aspects of the research, including synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of nanometric thin films. The group is led by Clémence Badie (tenure-track assistant professor) and Fouad Maroun (professor), both at École Polytechnique.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field. Motivation, curiosity, and analytical skills are essential, and experience in thin film deposition or electrochemistry is a plus. The position is for 36 months, with salary according to local regulations. Applications are accepted until the position is filled. To apply, submit your CV, cover letter, and reference contacts via the ADUM portal or directly to the supervisors by email.
