About this position

The University of Southampton is offering several fully funded PhD opportunities in the fields of soil biomechanics, bioturbation modeling, and acoustic monitoring of soil health. These projects address critical environmental and engineering challenges, such as landslide risk under climate change, sustainable slope stabilization using plant roots, and the development of advanced mathematical and acoustic techniques to monitor and model soil processes. Students will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Boldrewood Innovation Campus and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. The projects are supervised by Dr Siul Ruiz, Professor Joel Smethurst, Professor Tiina Roose, and Dr Michal Kalkowski, all based at the University of Southampton. Applicants should have a strong background in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field, with skills in programming and mathematical modeling. The positions are fully funded for UK students, with competitive scholarships available for EU and some international students. The application process involves submitting an online application, including a CV, academic references, transcripts, and proof of English proficiency if required. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2026. For more information, prospective students can contact Dr Siul Ruiz or Dr Michal Kalkowski directly. These projects offer the opportunity to develop expertise in environmental hazard mapping, computational modeling, experimental design, and sustainable engineering solutions, with the potential to make a significant impact on infrastructure resilience and environmental sustainability.
