About this position
ETH Zürich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Computational Design and Digital Fabrication of high-performance timber plate structures, based at Gramazio Kohler Research, the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at the Institute of Technology in Architecture. This interdisciplinary project, in collaboration with the Chair for Timber Structures (Prof. Dr. Andrea Frangi), aims to advance the planning, fabrication, and construction of timber plate structures through innovative digital and physical engineering approaches.
The research will be conducted within the Robotic Fabrication Laboratory (RFL), a world-class digital construction environment, and will focus on developing open-source software tools for planning automation and digital information exchange across architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) disciplines. Key topics include computational design, timber construction, CNC fabrication, robotic assembly, semantic data models, finite element analysis, and plugin development. The project emphasizes interdisciplinary teamwork and the integration of digital manufacturing techniques in sustainable timber engineering.
ETH Zürich offers an inclusive and diverse research culture, access to state-of-the-art equipment, and opportunities for professional development and industry collaboration. The successful candidate will join a vibrant community of researchers and educators dedicated to excellence and sustainability in the built environment.
Applicants should possess a strong architectural or advanced technical degree (FHEQ-Level 7), excellent programming skills (preferably Python), experience in CAD/CAM (ideally McNeel Rhinoceros) and/or robotic fabrication, and strong analytical and mathematical abilities. Previous experience in timber construction or structural engineering is advantageous. Fluency in English is required; German is beneficial but not mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate reliability, motivation, independence, and strong teamwork and communication skills.
The position is funded for four years according to standard SNSF regulations. The intended start date is April 1, 2026, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Required application materials include a letter of motivation, CV, architecture portfolio, academic diplomas and certificates, and contact details for at least two referees (with at least one uploaded reference letter). Applications must be submitted online via the ETH Zürich application portal; email or postal submissions will not be considered.
For further information, visit the Gramazio Kohler Research and Chair of Timber Structures websites. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Dr. Oliver Bucklin at [email protected] (no applications).
ETH Zürich is a leading global university in science and technology, renowned for its commitment to excellence, diversity, and sustainability. Join us in shaping the future of architectural design and timber engineering through cutting-edge research and innovation.
