About this position

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Agricultural and Food Economics at its Department of Economics in Uppsala, Sweden. The research group focuses on applied economic analysis of sustainable production practices and preparedness in agriculture, utilizing farm-level panel data, surveys, and advanced econometric modelling. The project is grounded in microeconomic theory and aims to analyze the uptake and consequences of sustainable practices in agriculture, contributing to the literature in agricultural economics and related fields.

The PhD student will join a vibrant research group with expertise in production economics, consumer economics, agricultural and food policy, and trade. The group collaborates with researchers in crop production, technology, animal health, and veterinary epidemiology, providing a stimulating interdisciplinary environment. The position involves supervised research leading to a PhD thesis, participation in doctoral courses (90 credits), and possible departmental duties such as teaching and administration (up to 20% of working hours).

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in agricultural economics, applied economics, or a related field, with at least 60 HEC in economics (including an advanced-level degree project). Strong quantitative skills in econometrics and statistical analysis, as well as excellent English communication skills, are essential. Experience with research methods in agricultural and food economics, scientific publication, and knowledge of Swedish or European agricultural systems are considered merits. English proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6 is required. Foreign applicants must present a certified copy of their passport at the interview.

The position is fully funded for four years, with salary progression according to local collective agreements. Tuition is covered, and the position is full-time. The application deadline is 30 April 2026, and the start date is by agreement. To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcript of records, a copy of your Master's thesis, proof of English proficiency, and contact details for two references via the SLU application portal.
