About this position

Karolinska Institutet is recruiting a fully funded PhD student to join a cutting-edge research team at the intersection of AI, bioinformatics, and cancer research. The position focuses on the early detection of biliary tract cancers (BTC) in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) using advanced artificial intelligence and multi-omics approaches. The successful candidate will work within the Unit of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, under the supervision of Professor Annika Bergquist, whose group specializes in precision medicine for liver and biliary diseases.

The doctoral project aims to develop and apply AI-based models for risk prediction and cancer detection by integrating longitudinal clinical, imaging (MRI), and multi-omics data. The research will explore genetic and epigenetic alterations to discover novel biomarkers for BTC risk, leveraging well-characterized national cohorts and biobank material. The interdisciplinary environment includes clinicians, bioinformaticians, and computational biologists, providing a unique opportunity to gain expertise in translational medicine, hepatology, and data science.

Applicants should have a master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, or a related field, with proven experience in R, Python, or similar tools. A strong foundation in bioinformatics, machine learning, and deep learning is essential. Desirable qualifications include experience in medical or biological sciences, hepatology, oncology, imaging data, multi-omics integration, and bioinformatics pipeline development. Excellent English communication skills are required, and personal suitability is highly valued.

The position offers a four-year full-time doctoral studentship with a contractual salary, tuition coverage, and additional benefits such as access to a modern gym and medical care reimbursements. Karolinska Institutet is renowned for its medical research and international collaborations, providing a creative and inspiring environment for doctoral education.

To apply, candidates must submit their application through the Varbi recruitment system, including a personal letter, CV, degree projects, publications, and documents certifying eligibility. The application deadline is December 26, 2025. For more information, visit the official job posting or contact Professor Annika Bergquist.
