About this position
The Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (IChF PAN) in Warsaw, Poland, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in biological chemistry and chemical biology as part of the prestigious Horizon Europe ERA Chairs project PERFECTION. The research will be conducted at the newly established Centre for Biological Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Marcin Drag, an internationally recognized expert in chemical biology and combinatorial chemistry of proteolytic enzymes, with support from Dr. Jeena Manayath Thekkeyil.
The PERFECTION project focuses on the phenomenon of unnatural amino acids in chemical biology for biological and medical applications. The selected PhD candidate will work on the design and synthesis of biomimetic, metal-active molecular constructs inspired by bleomycin for DNA damage in cancer therapy. The project aims to elucidate structure–bioactivity relationships and develop next-generation DNA-targeted therapeutic strategies. Research tasks include compound design and synthesis, in vitro cell experiments, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The candidate will also coordinate collaborations within IChF and with external academic and industrial partners.
The position offers a stimulating, supportive environment with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, international collaborations, and professional development opportunities such as scientific courses, mentoring, and conference participation. Additional benefits include private medical care discounts, MultiSport membership, and access to a social fund for housing and childcare support.
Applicants must have a master's degree in chemistry or a related field, good English proficiency, and knowledge of synthesis techniques. Motivation, teamwork, and readiness to learn in vitro biological chemistry are essential. Candidates must either be current doctoral students at the Warsaw-4-PhD School or apply for the July 2026 intake. The application process includes submitting a CV, reference letter, motivation letter, diploma scan, and a signed statement regarding recruitment regulations. The position is funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe, ERA Chairs), with a gross monthly salary of approximately 4,810 PLN and an additional doctoral scholarship of about 3,466 PLN per month upon successful admission to the doctoral school.
