About this position

Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest and most dynamic higher education institutions, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Chemistry with a specialization in Environmental Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry, known for its strong research profile and collaborative environment, invites applications for a doctoral project focused on computational models for assessing the exposure of organic pollutants in zebrafish. This interdisciplinary project sits at the intersection of computational modelling, analytical chemistry, and experimental toxicology. The main aim is to develop and validate new computational models to understand how organic pollutants are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted in zebrafish, with a particular focus on critical developmental stages such as early development and juvenile phases.

The research will advance physiologically based kinetic models by integrating tissue-specific data from mass spectrometry analyses, providing a realistic picture of chemical behavior across zebrafish life stages. The project is highly collaborative, involving Umeå University, Uppsala University, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with opportunities for international research visits. Training will be provided in state-of-the-art computational and analytical techniques, and students will gain valuable experience in interdisciplinary and international teamwork. The expected outcomes include novel modelling tools and new insights into the effects of pollutants on developing organisms.

The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree, with the main task being doctoral studies, research participation, and coursework. Additional duties may include teaching and departmental work (up to 20%). Employment is limited to four years full-time, or up to five years with part-time teaching, and includes a competitive salary and social benefits such as parental leave, holiday leave, and occupational health services.

Practical experience in programming, computational modelling, environmental chemistry, and mass spectrometry techniques is considered a merit.
