About this position

The Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg is offering a PhD position within the Excellence Cluster BlueMat, focusing on water-driven materials in the research area of Energy Materials. This interdisciplinary project aims to develop sustainable, interactive, and intelligent material systems that function in aqueous environments or derive their properties from water. The BlueMat cluster unites research in mechanical, fluid transport, photonic, and energy materials, supported by advanced imaging, modeling, and data exploitation platforms.

The PhD project, based at the DESY NanoLab, will investigate the structural and compositional evolution of electrocatalytically active nanoparticles, such as platinum (Pt) and iridium oxide (IrO2), under oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction conditions. The research will involve the preparation of nanoparticle model systems, electrocatalytic studies, operando characterization using surface-sensitive X-ray diffraction at synchrotron facilities, and in-situ analysis via infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The candidate will collaborate closely with BlueMat partners and is expected to disseminate findings through publications and public engagement.

DESY offers a vibrant international research environment, flexible working hours, family-friendly policies, health management, and occupational pension provision. The position is funded with a monthly salary at 67% of remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government), and employees receive a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket). The contract is limited to three years, with a start date of May 1, 2026.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science, and have experience in electrochemistry/electrocatalysis, X-ray diffraction, synchrotron radiation, and nanoparticle characterization. Additional experience in catalysis and nanoscience is advantageous. Strong teamwork skills and proficiency in English (minimum B2) are required. The doctoral degree will be awarded in collaboration with the University of Hamburg, and candidates must meet its admission requirements.

To apply, submit a letter of motivation, CV, relevant certificates, and two letters of reference via the DESY application portal. Women and international candidates are especially encouraged to apply. For further information, contact Prof. A Stierle at [email protected].
