About this position
The Department of Geosciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD candidate to join a cutting-edge research project in geothermal energy and advanced drilling technologies. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of geoscience, engineering, and data science, with a focus on adapting innovations from the oil and gas sector to geothermal applications in Norway’s challenging igneous and metamorphic geological conditions.
The research project aims to develop next-generation drilling methods to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enable scalable geothermal solutions such as deep wells and seasonal heat storage systems like GeoTermos. The work will involve experimental research, physical modelling, and digital-twin approaches, leveraging AI-driven optimisation to enhance drillability, increase the rate of penetration, and minimise non-productive time.
Key research topics include hard-rock drilling technologies, bit wear, drilling fluid performance, and real-time, data-driven optimisation using machine learning techniques. The project is highly interdisciplinary, integrating engineering, geoscience, and data science within a collaborative research environment.
Applicants with industrial or research experience in geothermal drilling, drill bits, drilling fluids, or hard-rock environments are especially encouraged to apply. Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Python for data analysis, automation, and simulations is highly beneficial. The position offers the chance to work closely with research groups in Well & Reservoir and Engineering Geology & Rock Mechanics, and to build strong industry connections for future career opportunities in academia or the energy sector.
For more information and to apply, visit the LinkedIn post or contact the supervisors. The Department of Geosciences at NTNU offers education at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels and is home to five research groups.
