About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a Ph.D. position in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Sol–Gel Chemistry & Materials Science. The Laboratory for Building Energy Materials and Components specializes in developing advanced, eco-friendly porous materials for insulation, sorption, and energy applications. The research portfolio covers fundamental materials chemistry, process–structure–property relationships, and application-driven R&D, with strong collaborations across academia and industry.

The project centers on Empa’s expertise in polyimide aerogels and porous polymer systems, aiming to advance the chemistry-driven understanding of structure formation in these materials. Key objectives include elucidating how monomer structure, solvent choice, and oligomer formation influence polymerization pathways, phase behavior, and network evolution; understanding polymer–solvent interactions, aggregation mechanisms, and gelation kinetics; designing and synthesizing new monomers and polymer architectures to tailor hierarchical pore structures; and establishing structure–property relationships linking molecular design to macroscopic performance.

The position is primarily intended for a Ph.D. student, but exceptionally strong postdoctoral candidates may also be considered. The project is fundamental in nature but embedded in an industry-sponsored framework, providing resources and pathways toward innovation. As a researcher, you will design and execute synthesis strategies, investigate polymerization mechanisms, apply advanced materials characterization techniques, coordinate project activities, supervise interns, host visiting researchers, analyze experimental data, contribute to patent applications, lead scientific publications, and present at international conferences. Occasional travel to an industry partner in Asia may be required, and doctoral coursework will be conducted at a Swiss university.

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, sol–gel chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field (Ph.D. for postdoctoral applicants). Strong interest in polymer chemistry fundamentals and structure-controlled materials design is essential. Experience with organic synthesis, polymer–solvent interactions, gelation, or porous materials is advantageous. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g., nitrogen sorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, NMR, thermal conductivity) and basic knowledge of molecular simulation or modelling are beneficial. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

Empa offers a stimulating, international, and collaborative research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, substantial freedom to develop independent scientific ideas, and attractive employment conditions. The institution is committed to inclusion and diversity, providing a supportive and safe-to-fail work environment. The Ph.D. contract is for 3 years, with a start date in May 2026 or upon agreement; postdoctoral contracts are for 2 years at 60–100% employment. Salary and benefits follow Swiss standards and ETH Domain policies.

To apply, submit your complete online application—including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons—exclusively via the Empa job portal. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered. For more information and to apply, use the provided application link.
