About this position

Luleå University of Technology, a rapidly growing institution with world-leading expertise in several research areas, offers a fully funded PhD position in Space Systems for Critical Infrastructure Resilience. Located in Kiruna, Northern Sweden—a European space region—the university collaborates closely with major players in space technology and science, including the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, EISCAT Scientific Association, and the Swedish Space Corporation. The Division of Space Technology at LTU conducts cutting-edge research in atmospheric science and space systems, supported by high-quality laboratory facilities for rocket propulsion, small satellites, asteroid engineering, and space avionics.

The Space Systems group focuses on payloads, spacecraft, and launchers for technology demonstration and utilization, as well as space applications and exploration in the upper atmosphere, Earth orbit, and planetary space. The subject area encompasses systems for control, instrumentation, and communication in the upper atmosphere and space, with particular emphasis on reliable, radiation-resistant, low-power electronic systems and their miniaturization.

This PhD project is part of an interdisciplinary regional development initiative linked to the “Campus Totalförsvar” program, aiming to provide applied, needs-driven research to dual-use actors in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties. The research will focus on space-related solutions to monitor and support critical infrastructure such as energy supply, water supply, resource allocation, logistics, production, and preparedness in dual-use environments. The overarching goal is to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure against disruptions during crisis situations.

As a PhD student, you will engage in both experimental and theoretical research, communicate your findings at national and international conferences, and publish in scientific journals. Most of your time will be devoted to research and studies, with opportunities to contribute to teaching. The position offers involvement in challenging research projects within a dynamic and interdisciplinary group.

Eligibility requires a master’s degree or equivalent in aerospace engineering or a related subject, along with prior experience in small spacecraft missions (pico, nano, or micro satellites), including design, development, or operations of satellite hardware or software. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are essential. The position is fully funded for 4 years, with the possibility of teaching and departmental duties up to 20%.

Applications should be submitted online, including a CV, personal letter, and verified diplomas from high school and universities, written in English or Swedish. The closing date for applications is 28 May 2026. For further information, contact Head of Division Victoria Barabash ([email protected]) or Chair Professor in Space Systems René Laufer ([email protected]). Reference number: 2261-2026.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about space systems, critical infrastructure resilience, and interdisciplinary research in a vibrant academic environment.
