About this position
The Villum Foundation is supporting a major research initiative with a 1 billion DKK grant over ten years to promote a sustainable built environment. As part of this effort, Aalborg University's Faculty of Engineering, Department of the Built Environment, and Doctoral School of Engineering and Science invite applications for a fully funded PhD position in Civil Engineering, focusing on the structural reliability of sustainable materials, specifically moisture transfer and storage processes in biobased porous materials.
This research addresses the vulnerability of low-carbon construction materials—such as biobased and recycled materials—to moisture loads, which can lead to fungal growth, frost damage, and deterioration affecting both building durability and indoor health. The project aims to develop advanced models for moisture transfer and storage in porous materials, incorporating the unique characteristics of novel, reused, and bio-based materials. Key research activities include cataloguing state-of-the-art material characterization models, establishing experimental baselines for traditional and innovative materials, developing new modeling and testing methods, and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to connect existing and novel models with comprehensive material datasets. Statistical methods will be applied to address uncertainty and the probabilistic nature of the models.
The successful candidate will join the Research Group for Building Physics, a dynamic team engaged in research on bio-based materials, retrofitting, service life, climate adaptation, and robust solutions for the built environment. The group collaborates extensively with industry, government, and international partners, contributing to guidelines, consultancy, and research dissemination. The position offers a vibrant interdisciplinary environment with opportunities for knowledge sharing and professional growth.
Applicants should possess a Master's degree and demonstrate strong theoretical knowledge in hygrothermal building physics and material science. Experience in related fields such as wood and soil science, experimental material characterization, statistical analysis of large datasets, and digital modeling (including ML and AI) is highly desirable. Enrollment as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science is required, with progress assessments conducted regularly in accordance with Danish regulations.
The position is funded according to the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement), offering competitive salary and employment terms. The appointment is for three years, starting April 1, 2026 or soon thereafter.
To apply, candidates must submit an application via Aalborg University's recruitment system, including a motivation statement, CV, diplomas, project description, and a one-page research vision. The university values diversity and encourages applicants from all backgrounds. For further information, contact Dr. Ruut Hannele Peuhkuri ([email protected]) or Annemarie Davidsen ([email protected]).
Application deadline: March 31, 2026.
