About this position
The Laboratory of Synthetic Polymer Chemistry (LCPS) at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), led by Assistant Professor Suong Nguyen, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position starting in Summer or Fall 2026. The group focuses on the development of novel catalysts and methodologies for precise control over polymerization reactions, aiming to discover new reactivities and enable access to functional and sustainable polymers. Research in the group is highly interdisciplinary, operating at the interface of polymer chemistry, catalysis, synthetic organic chemistry, and materials science, and is supported by mechanistic insights and computational studies.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science, with hands-on experience in polymer or organic synthesis and familiarity with standard characterization techniques such as NMR, IR, and chromatography. Additional experience with material characterization methods (e.g., GPC, tensile testing, rheology, DMA, DSC, TGA) is advantageous but not required. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm, self-motivation, creativity, and strong communication skills in English.
The position is fully funded for four years at 100% work rate and includes an internationally competitive stipend, comprehensive training, and opportunities for professional development and collaboration with leading research groups at EPFL and beyond. The LCPS group offers a supportive and inclusive environment, with networking opportunities through the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Catalysis Center, seminars, and conferences.
To apply, candidates must submit a single PDF containing a statement of purpose (max 2 pages), a CV with three referees (including their contact details), and transcripts from their bachelor's and, if relevant, master's degrees. Applications should be sent to Prof. Suong Nguyen at [email protected] with the subject line 'LCPS PhD Application: [Your name]'. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. International students should consider visa processing times (approximately 2 months for EU citizens and 6 months for others).
