The International Max Planck Research School for Cognitive NeuroImaging (IMPRS CoNI) offers a world-class PhD programme in the highly interdisciplinary field of human neuroscience, with a particular focus on cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging. Hosted by Leipzig University in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS), Technical University of Dresden, and University College London, this programme provides doctoral students with comprehensive training and exposure to cutting-edge research.

IMPRS CoNI covers a broad spectrum of topics, including cognitive neuroscience, clinical and translational neuroscience, neuroimaging methods, computational neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, such as advanced MRI systems (including one of only four Connectom MRI systems worldwide), EEG, MEG, PET-MRI, near-infrared spectroscopy, TMS, tDCS, and high-performance computing facilities for computational modelling and data analysis.

The curriculum is structured into three main modules: Cognitive Neuroscience, Clinical and Translational Neuroscience, and Development of Neuroimaging Methods and Computational Modelling. Training is delivered through lectures, practical exercises, summer schools, retreats, and workshops, with a strong emphasis on hybrid and digital teaching formats. The flipped classroom concept and blended learning activities foster active student engagement and problem-solving skills. Each student develops an Individual Development Plan (IDP) in collaboration with their Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC), ensuring tailored training and mentoring throughout the PhD journey.

The programme is full-time, typically lasting three to four years, and does not require teaching obligations, though students may participate in teaching activities if desired. All courses are conducted in English, and international students are supported with accommodation, visa matters, and integration services.

Funding is available for most doctoral researchers through contracts based on the German TVöD system, offering competitive compensation (currently around 3,098 EUR gross per month for 65% of pay group 13, maximum level 2) for three years, with a possible one-year extension. Additional funding sources include departmental and third-party grants, as well as scholarships. All students receive support for attending conferences and workshops.

Applicants should hold an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as neuroscience, psychology, medicine, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, neuroimaging, or biochemistry, from an internationally recognised university. Research experience in a related area is essential. Proficiency in English is required, with minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores specified. Exceptionally, candidates with a Bachelor’s degree may be admitted after completing an orientation phase and passing an aptitude exam at Leipzig University.
