About this position

The University of Oslo invites applications for a PhD Research Fellowship in Theoretical and Computational Active Matter Physics, focusing on glioblastoma invasion. This position is based in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and is part of the interdisciplinary GLIOFORCE research team. GLIOFORCE is a Life Science Convergence Environment that unites physics, biomedicine, engineering, and pharmacy to tackle fundamental challenges in cancer research.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly invasive and lethal brain cancer, with progression governed by cellular and nuclear mechanics, cytoskeletal organization, and interactions with a mechanically heterogeneous brain microenvironment. The GLIOFORCE project investigates mechano-adaptation as a targetable vulnerability in GBM, aiming to identify biomechanical weak points in cancer cell invasion and inform the development of innovative, mechanics-based intervention strategies.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant interdisciplinary consortium, collaborating with three other PhD students and researchers across multiple fields. The research will combine theory, computation, and experiments to model and manipulate the physical forces experienced by invading cancer cells. By focusing on the biomechanics of cancer cell spreading, GLIOFORCE seeks to open new avenues for the treatment of aggressive cancers such as glioblastoma.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics or a closely related discipline, with a strong background in theoretical and computational physics. Experience in interdisciplinary research, biomedicine, engineering, or pharmacy is advantageous. Motivation for cancer research and the ability to work collaboratively in a research consortium are essential. Proficiency in English is required.

The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and is not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme. The application deadline is 5 April 2026.
