The Institute of Aerospace Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position (Doctoral Candidate DC7) focused on the evolution of the rocket engine exhaust plume along the flight trajectory, as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA SLICE Doctoral Network. The SLICE project aims to bridge space engineering and climate science, addressing the environmental impacts of space launch systems, particularly their emissions and effects on atmospheric layers and climate change. The research will contribute to actionable solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable space transportation in Europe.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant international research group at TUD, one of Germany’s leading technical universities and a recognized University of Excellence. The Institute of Aerospace Engineering is renowned for its innovative work in space propulsion, flight mechanics, and planetary infrastructures. The Chair of Space Systems, which coordinates this position, has extensive experience in European research networks and offers access to cutting-edge facilities and collaborations.

The doctoral project will involve defining interface regions for plume analysis, conducting numerical simulations of exhaust plume propagation through various atmospheric layers, and developing models to assess the climatic influence of rocket emissions. The candidate will collaborate with international partners, including secondments at CERFACS (France) and IPSL (France), and contribute to the integration of plume data into global climate models.

Applicants must hold or be about to complete a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field. Essential skills include strong backgrounds in physical and analytical chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied physics. Experience with eco-design, climate science, and life-cycle assessment is desirable. Excellent English communication skills are required, and candidates must be eligible for PhD enrollment at TUD and comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA mobility and eligibility rules.

The position offers a competitive salary according to MSCA regulations, including living, mobility, and family allowances if eligible, with a 36-month employment contract. Applicants must hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, physics, or a closely related field. Essential skills include solid knowledge of physical and analytical chemistry (phase changes), computer science and informatics (numerical analysis, simulation, optimization, modeling tools, CFD), product and process engineering (space engineering), condensed matter physics (fluid mechanics and dynamics), and applied physics (atmospheric entry flows). Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently and independently in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environment, as well as in a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at TU Dresden. Desired skills include knowledge in eco-design, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, and project management. Knowledge of German is a plus. Candidates must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. At the date of recruitment, candidates must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.
