This PhD position is offered by the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine – General Pediatrics at the University of Münster, Germany, in Prof. Rutsch's research group. The project investigates the molecular basis, pathogenetic principles, and therapeutic options for ectopic calcifications, with a particular focus on retinal calcifications associated with rare diseases such as pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The research is interdisciplinary, involving collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy. The innovative therapeutic approach centers on a nanoparticulate system designed to dissolve calcifications in the retina. As a doctoral candidate, you will be responsible for testing various forms of application in animal models, primarily mice. The project utilizes state-of-the-art technologies, including electron microscopy, fluorescence reflectance imaging, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fluorescence angiography, and electroretinography. You will work within a dedicated team of medical professionals, scientists, and technical assistants, gaining exposure to both experimental and clinical research. The position offers opportunities to learn and deepen your knowledge of histological methods and imaging techniques, as well as access to excellent facilities and equipment on the University of Münster campus.
