About this position

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) in Jena, Germany, is offering a PhD position in Bioprocess Engineering. The research focuses on developing and investigating aerobic bioprocesses that generate minimal CO2 emissions, achieved through molecular biological modifications and innovative process control. This project is part of a joint DFG initiative, collaborating with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and Forschungszentrum Jülich, with the main process work based at the Biotechnikum in Jena.

The successful candidate will be responsible for scaling fermentation processes from shake flask to stirred tank scale (up to 300 L), implementing the complete bioprocess chain from methanol to pure product, and creating mass and energy balances. The role includes processing, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data, preparing reports and presentations, and learning to write scientific publications. Participation in scientific discussions and presentations at national and international conferences is expected.

Applicants should have an MSc or diploma in bioprocess engineering or a related field, with practical knowledge of applied microbiology and fermentation technology, and theoretical understanding of process scaling. Strong interdisciplinary collaboration, teamwork, and communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in German and English.

The Bio Pilot Plant at Leibniz-HKI supports the creation of new active substances and microbiological products for diverse applications. The institute offers a dynamic, innovative, and interdisciplinary research environment, state-of-the-art facilities, and close cooperation with life science and technical institutes. Graduate students will register at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and benefit from extended training through the Jena Graduate Academy and the Jena School of Microbial Communication.

Funding is provided according to the German TV-L salary agreement for public service employees. Leibniz-HKI is committed to equal opportunity and diversity, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups, especially female scientists. Applications should be submitted online with a cover letter, CV, previous work, references, and certificates.
