About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD student position in integrated photonics, based at the Division of Photonics within the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience. The successful candidate will join the integrated ultrafast photonics team, contributing to innovative research in photonic integration in a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic environment. The department is renowned for advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems, fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations with academia, industry, and society. Access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and a vibrant international research environment is provided.
The Photonics Laboratory at Chalmers is a dynamic hub where light-based technologies drive innovation in communication, sensing, and computing. The team’s expertise spans optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication, tackling real-world challenges from long-haul transmission to datacenter interconnects. PhD students and postdocs work closely with senior scientists to shape the future of photonics.
This PhD project is part of a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant focused on integrated optical clocks and photonic synchronization. The research involves developing and integrating optical amplifiers on chip to enhance the performance of microresonator frequency combs, aiming for compact, energy-efficient photonic systems for precision timing, datacenters, and future communication technologies.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and programming skills in Matlab or Python are required. Experience in nanotechnology (cleanroom), measurement, design or analysis of integrated photonic devices, and familiarity with software tools such as Lumerical or COMSOL are advantageous.
The position includes advanced coursework within the Graduate School of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, opportunities to develop scientific concepts, and communication of research results. Teaching at the undergraduate level or other duties may comprise up to 20% of working hours, potentially extending the appointment to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students are employees with full benefits. Physical presence throughout the study period is required, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, with initiatives such as the GENIE project. Swedish courses are available for non-native speakers.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (CV, personal letter, introduction, motivation, thesis, transcripts) via the online application form. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is March 30, 2026.
