The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden, is offering a fully funded PhD student position in microbiology within the Department of Molecular Sciences. The research group focuses on microbial biotechnology, with a strong emphasis on understanding how syntrophic microorganisms interact to drive sustainable energy solutions such as biogas production and bioelectrochemical systems. The project will utilize advanced anaerobic cultivation techniques and omics-based approaches (metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics) to investigate cell communication and molecular mechanisms underlying microbial cooperation. The ultimate goal is to enhance the robustness and efficiency of biogas systems and contribute to the transition toward a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.

The department provides a vibrant international academic environment with expertise in plant biology, mycology, plant pathology, microbiology, food science, computational genetics, chemistry, and biotechnology. State-of-the-art infrastructure includes advanced microscopy, molecular biology platforms, X-ray techniques, and NMR. Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, or a related field, and be fluent in English. Experience in microbial cultivation (especially anaerobic), molecular methods, and basic bioinformatics is meriting.
