About this position

Uppsala University’s Department of Human Geography is offering two fully funded PhD student positions starting 1 September 2026. The positions focus on two main research areas: Housing and Urban Geography (affiliated with the Institute for Housing and Urban Research, IBF) and Political Ecology (including feminist and decolonial perspectives). Candidates are encouraged to propose their own research projects within these areas, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.

The PhD program consists of 180 credits for the dissertation and 60 credits for doctoral coursework, totaling four years of full-time study. Students may spend up to 20% of their time on teaching or administrative tasks. The department is recognized for its world-class research environment, interdisciplinary opportunities, and HR Excellence in Research award.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Human Geography or an equivalent qualification (at least 240 credits, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project). Qualifications must be fulfilled by 30 June 2026. Desired skills include experience with qualitative and quantitative methods (such as GIS and spatial analysis), strong academic writing in English or Swedish, independence, creativity, and motivation to contribute to research with societal relevance.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted online and include a completed application form, cover letter (max 2 pages), CV, research plan (3–4 pages), academic transcripts, a sample of written academic work, and contact information for two academic references. Interviews will be held in April 2026, with results communicated by mid-May. For more information, contact Professor David Jansson ([email protected]).
