This funded PhD studentship at Brunel University London focuses on the decarbonisation of industrial cooking processes in the food manufacturing sector, with a particular emphasis on maintaining quality characteristics. The project addresses the urgent need to phase out natural gas in food processing, in line with the UK's net zero target by 2050. Natural gas, while previously preferred for its cost and lower emissions compared to other fossil fuels, cannot be decarbonised through renewable energy or nuclear power. This transition presents significant challenges for the industry, including the adoption of new processing technologies, informed decision-making, and capital investment.

The research will investigate emerging electrified technologies, energy recovery systems, and alternative gas-burning fuels to support the decarbonisation of industrial cooking. The project is based within the Centre for Sustainable Energy Use in Food Chains (CSEF), which offers substantial expertise and experimental facilities. Applicants should hold, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in food science and technology, chemical or process engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline. Essential skills include teamwork, observation, communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. A postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be advantageous. If applicable, candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in all sections or equivalent).

The studentship is open to both UK home and overseas students. Funding includes a stipend of £23,805 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting) plus tuition fees, subject to UKRI increase. The award duration is four years, with a latest start date of 1 October 2026.
