PhD Studentship: Evaluating Local Impact of Climate Funding under the Sustainable Transitions Programme University of Essex in United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex offers an exceptional opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research on the local impact of climate funding, specifically focusing on 'loss and damage' finance in developing countries. Hosted under the ‘Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme’, the project is designed to explore how global climate finance commitments translate into effective support for vulnerable communities at the local level.

The research will be supervised by experts from Essex Business School and Essex Law School, ensuring a comprehensive approach that integrates governance, accountability, and legal frameworks. The project aims to identify and address the structural challenges—such as resource distribution, access to finance, corruption, and multilevel governance—that complicate the implementation of climate funding for disadvantaged communities. Key research questions include evaluating the adequacy and sources of finance, the effectiveness of governance systems, and the accountability mechanisms involved in distributing support.

Methodologically, the project combines stakeholder analysis, case studies, policy reviews, and direct community engagement to design resilient strategies that make climate funding more responsive to local needs. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme allows for a holistic assessment of economic, environmental, and social impacts, with the flexibility for the successful candidate to shape their own research proposal within the broad project area.

Doctoral scholars will benefit from the Sustainable Transitions training programme, which includes initial and ongoing training in interdisciplinary research methods and the secondary discipline relevant to the project. Additional support is provided through the Proficio scheme (£2,500 for training courses) and a research allowance of £10,000 for authorised research costs. All scholars become part of the University’s Centre for Environment & Society, gaining access to events and networking opportunities.

Funding includes a full home tuition fee waiver, an annual living stipend of £20,780 (2025-26), and generous research and training allowances. The stipend for 2026-27 will be announced. This studentship is ideal for candidates with a master’s degree in governance, development, or accountability, and a strong interest in law and climate finance. Prior legal education is not required, as training will be provided.
