Description

[100% fees covered and a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £20,780 (2025/26 UKRI rate). Additional project costs provided.] This fully funded PhD studentship at Newcastle University offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation photonic devices for quantum applications. The project focuses on experimental physics, specifically the creation and investigation of novel materials and structures that enable strong light-matter interactions and enhanced nonlinear optical responses. Students will work on advanced topics in quantum photonics, including semiconductors, composites, waveguides, and resonators, with the aim of achieving high-performance and energy-efficient photonic functionalities. As part of this interdisciplinary research, you will explore synthesis and fabrication strategies for new materials, and develop methods for advanced optical characterisation. The project provides access to state-of-the-art photonic experimental instruments and advanced characterisation facilities at Newcastle University, ensuring comprehensive training and support throughout your studies. The studentship is sponsored by EPSRC and covers 100% of tuition fees, plus a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £20,780 (2025/26 UKRI rate). Additional project costs are also provided, making this an attractive opportunity for candidates interested in cutting-edge research in quantum photonics and materials science. Eligibility requires a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject. The admissions process is contextual, considering key competencies and experience alongside academic qualifications. Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. A Masters qualification is not mandatory if you have a minimum 2:1 degree or can demonstrate alternative research or work-based experience. Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in all sub-skills). International candidates may need an ATAS clearance certificate. To apply, complete the specified personal statement document and submit it with your application via the University’s Apply to Newcastle Portal. Select 'PhD Physics (FT) (Experimental)' using programme code 8839F, and enter the studentship code DLA2615 in the relevant field. Follow the instructions for the research proposal and personal statement as outlined in the advert. For further information, contact Dr. Leo Tsui at leo.tsui@newcastle.ac.uk or doctoral.awards@ncl.ac.uk for independent advice.
