About this position

This PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham focuses on the detection and quantification of turbulence in blood flow using advanced 4D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. Flow disturbances in blood are key indicators of cardiovascular diseases, often resulting from abnormal heart movement or arterial blockages. Traditional Doppler ultrasound methods can be unreliable for complex cases, making 4D MRI a promising alternative for visualizing and analyzing intricate, unsteady flow patterns deep within the human body. The project aims to address current limitations in clinical decision-making with 4D MRI, such as lengthy scanning times and measurement inaccuracies, by developing improved scanning strategies and calibration methods.

Research will be conducted using a vascular flow phantom, with turbulence and velocity measured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to calibrate MRI data. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations will further inform the development of new MRI scanning strategies. The interdisciplinary supervision team includes Professor Kwing-So Choi, an expert in fluid mechanics and turbulence control, and Professor Penny Gowland, a renowned academic in MRI research for biomedical applications. The project is based at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, a leading international hub for medical imaging innovation.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a 1st class degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or applied mathematics, preferably at master's level. Candidates with a 2:1 degree and relevant research experience may also be considered. The opportunity is open to both UK and international students, with special encouragement for applicants from China to apply in partnership with the China Scholarship Council. This is a self-funded PhD position, so candidates must secure their own funding, either privately or through external/government sources.
