About this position

Participation in competitive sport is associated with a range of potential positive and negative consequences in athletes’ wellbeing. Using the broader ecological systems’ approach, the present project addresses a line of research that explores the role of coaches and parents in facilitating the development of athletes’ health assets. The proposals may include the role of coaches’ and instructors’ pedagogical practices, as well as that of parental involvement, on the development of athletes’ intrapersonal and interpersonal resources that impact quality of life and wellbeing. Projects may also involve how coaches make use of Mental Health Literacy to impact positive outcomes in athletes. Outcomes may relate to cognitive, motivational and emotional dimensions of athletes’ sport experience. For example, sport as a vehicle to learn emotional control, resilience and striving under pressure is a highly relevant topic. The experience of coaches as decision makers and educators can be analysed, by exploring how they use competition as a tool to promote personal growth. Although quantitative methodologies will be preferred, the use of mixed methods, including observational research, will be encouraged.Interested prospective students should contact Dr Luis Calmeiro.Important NoteWe welcome you to have a conversation with Assistant Professor Luis Calmeiro to discuss this PhD project further.
