The Department of Medical Neurobiology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem campus invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow position in the Developmental Neurobiology Laboratory led by Professor Chaya Kalcheim. The campus is a central hub for medical and health-related research, hosting the Faculty of Medicine and several allied health schools adjacent to Hadassah Hospital. The department is renowned for its advanced research in molecular, cellular, and developmental neuroscience, collaborating closely with the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC).

The research group focuses on the generation of complexity during embryonic development, with particular emphasis on the nervous and skeletal systems. Key research themes include the molecular and cellular mechanisms guiding the development of the neural tube and neural crest, which are precursors to the central and peripheral nervous systems. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing molecular biology, cell biology, imaging, bioinformatics, in ovo microsurgery, and gene manipulation to investigate cell fate decisions, segregation, migration, and final positioning during development.

The postdoctoral project centers on dissecting the roles of major signaling pathways—Wnt, BMP, retinoic acid, and sonic hedgehog—in regulating cell fate, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and cell migration. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, collaborative team, conducting independent and group research, contributing to publications, and participating in lab meetings and conferences. Professor Chaya Kalcheim, a distinguished leader in developmental neurobiology, has made significant contributions to understanding neural crest cells and somite-derived structures. Her laboratory utilizes avian models and a range of cutting-edge techniques, including in ovo microsurgery, gene misexpression, in vitro explants, imaging, and RNA sequencing. Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Prusiner-Abramsky Prize in Neurosciences and a Career Award from the Israeli Society for Developmental Biology.
