About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position in microbial biotechnology and engineering, focusing on the biosynthesis of plant-AMF signaling compounds via microbial cell factories. The successful candidate will join the BioPort group at the Centre for Synthetic Biology, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, and contribute to the Horizon Europe Pathfinder project “Engineering bioreactor mass production of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for European farming (AMFactory)”.

The BioPort group is a dynamic team working on fundamental and applied aspects of industrial biotechnology and synthetic biology, utilizing various microorganisms. The research will center on enabling low-cost, large-scale biosynthesis of plant-AMF signaling compounds, which are crucial for optimal fungal colonization of plant roots. These compounds will be identified by project partners, and the postdoc will establish their heterologous production in microbial cell factories such as Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or Yarrowia lipolytica. The project aims to bridge the gap between contaminant-free production of AMFs in root organ cultures and their mass-production in bioreactors, enhancing the competitiveness of EU agriculture in the AMF bioinoculant market.

At least 70% of the assignment will be dedicated to academic research, with additional responsibilities including guiding PhD students, coordinating project activities, supporting education, and grant writing. The position offers a contract of indefinite duration (maximum 17 months, with possible extension), competitive remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4, and comprehensive staff benefits such as training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate (PhD) obtained within the last 6 years in Bioscience Engineering, Biochemistry, Metabolic Engineering, Applied Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology, or a related field. Essential skills include molecular biology, microbiology, and advanced engineering of E. coli and/or yeast. Experience with metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yarrowia lipolytica, or Starmerella bombicola is strongly recommended. Additional experience in industrial biotechnology, synthetic biology, or fermentation technology is advantageous. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Dutch is a plus. Candidates should demonstrate scientific maturity, independence, and strong coordination and communication skills.

To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 15 December 2025. Required documents include your CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), cover letter, diploma transcript (and translation if needed), and a list of two references plus a one-page abstract of your doctoral thesis. Optional reference letters may be included. Applications sent by email will not be accepted.
