About this position

Umeå University, in collaboration with the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in data-driven life science. The position is hosted by Bjoern O. Schroeder, Docent in Infection Biology and MIMS Group Leader, whose research focuses on gut bacteria, diet, and intestinal barrier function. The DDLS program is a major Swedish initiative aimed at recruiting and training the next generation of computational and data-driven life scientists, with a total funding of 3.3 billion SEK over 12 years.

The postdoc call targets projects in four strategic research areas: Cell and Molecular Biology, Evolution and Biodiversity, Precision Medicine and Diagnostics, and Epidemiology and Biology of Infection. Candidates with expertise in gut microbiota analyses, machine learning, multiomics, and advanced data analysis are encouraged to apply. The research environment offers strong support in both life science and data science, with opportunities for networking, training, and collaboration across Sweden.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent) obtained within the last three years (exceptions apply) and should not have been employed as a postdoc for more than one year with the same employer. Strong merit is given to those applying with a different supervisor than their main PhD advisor. The position is fully funded for two years (2 MSEK), with employment at Umeå University or another Swedish institution. Up to 10% of working time may be allocated to teaching or service duties.

Applications must include a proposal abstract, research plan, CV, references, and other required documents, all in English. The call opens on January 12, 2026, with a deadline of March 31, 2026. Interested candidates should contact Bjoern O. Schroeder early in 2026 to discuss potential projects and are encouraged to review the full call details and eligibility criteria on the SciLifeLab website.

For more information, visit the DDLS postdoc call page or contact the host supervisor. This is an excellent opportunity for highly motivated researchers passionate about data-driven approaches in life science, gut microbiota, and computational biology.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
