About this position

The professorship for history and philosophy of mathematical sciences at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Roy Wagner, invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on the development, practice, or social and cultural roles of mathematics. The group is dedicated to exploring mathematical knowledge from the perspective of the humanities, employing diverse methodological approaches to both historical and contemporary mathematical cultures.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research in areas such as the history or philosophy of mathematics, or related fields like science and technology studies, cultural studies, or social anthropology. Projects on non-European mathematics, commercial or practical mathematics, cross-cultural mathematical exchange, and philosophical approaches that consider mathematics as a practice are especially encouraged. The position is not suited for strict analytic philosophy projects, but welcomes those integrating analytic methodologies.

This is a full-time (41 hours/week) appointment for two years, with the possibility of extension. The role includes teaching one course per semester in the MAGPW or SiP programs, participation in academic and social activities, and access to teaching assistants, research and travel funding, and ETH Zürich’s extensive career development resources. Flexible working conditions, including part-time and home office options, are available to support care-work, health, or wellbeing needs.

Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree in a relevant field before the start date (around September 2026), demonstrate the ability to develop and lead independent research, and be committed to collaboration and supporting team members. The working language is English. The application requires a CV with publications, a summary of the PhD, a research plan, a statement on diversity and inclusion, and contact details for two references. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis, with a final decision expected by the end of June 2026.

ETH Zürich is a world-leading university in science and technology, committed to diversity, sustainability, and fostering an inclusive academic environment. For questions about the position, contact Prof. Roy Wagner at [email protected]. Applications must be submitted through the online portal; email or postal submissions will not be considered.
