Description

The McKinley Ocean Carbon group at Columbia University in the City of New York is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to study the impacts of bubbles on air-sea CO2 and O2 gas fluxes using advanced ocean modeling techniques. This research is critical for understanding climate and ocean life, particularly in the high latitude North Atlantic, a region essential for deep-water formation and long-term sequestration of anthropogenic CO2 and O2. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research group at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the LEAP-STC, contributing to state-of-the-art regional ocean simulations that utilize data assimilation to optimize biogeochemical processes (ASTE-BGC). The postdoc will be responsible for integrating bubble-mediated flux parameterization codes into the ASTE-BGC model, running simulations, analyzing the impacts on CO2 and O2 fluxes and budgets, and publishing the results. The position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of climate science, oceanography, and biogeochemistry, with access to world-class resources and a collaborative environment in New York City. Applicants should have a PhD in oceanography, atmospheric science, earth science, environmental science, or a related field. Experience with numerical modeling, data assimilation, and biogeochemical processes is highly desirable. Strong programming skills and a record of scientific publication are preferred. The position is fully funded, with details on salary and benefits available at the official university posting. The application deadline is December 18, 2025.
