Description

Two postdoctoral positions are available at the Martin Buber Professorship for Jewish Religious Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt, as part of the LOEWE Center “Dynamics of Religion: Ambivalent Neighbourhoods between Judaism, Christianity and Islam in Historical and Contemporary Constellations.” The LOEWE Center, funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Art, and Culture, is an interdisciplinary research initiative led by Goethe University Frankfurt in collaboration with Philipps University Marburg and Justus Liebig University Giessen. The center investigates the complex religious, cultural, and socio-political dynamics between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, both historically and in the present day, across five program areas and 31 subprojects.

The two postdoc positions are based at the Department of Protestant Theology (coordinating unit) at Goethe University Frankfurt, starting January 1, 2026 or later, and are fixed-term until December 31, 2029. One position focuses on the subproject “Knowledge Transfer in the Encounter between Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Philosophy: Historical and Historiographical Perspectives” (supervised by Prof. Christian Wiese and Prof. Yossef Schwartz, Tel Aviv University). The other position is part of the subproject “Jewish Diasporic Concepts and Experiences of Multireligious Neighbourhoods in Confrontation with Modern Anti-Semitism” (supervised by Prof. Christian Wiese and Adjunct Prof. Stefan Vogt).

Applicants should hold an excellent doctorate in a relevant field (e.g., Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology, History, Philosophy, Archaeology, Ethnology, Sociology, or Education). Required are strong independent research skills, theoretical grounding, team orientation, and excellent English and good German skills (or willingness to acquire them). Additional language and methodological skills relevant to the subproject, as well as experience with digital methods, are advantageous. The positions are fully funded (E13 TV-G-U, 100%), with salary and social benefits according to the collective agreement for the public service of the state of Hesse. The research environment is interdisciplinary, international, and offers opportunities for habilitation or monographic qualification, as well as participation in academic networks, conferences, and mentoring.

Applications should be submitted by January 9, 2026, as a single PDF to [email protected]. For further details on the center, subprojects, and requirements, consult the project website. For questions, contact Prof. Christian Wiese ([email protected]) or Prof. Armina Omerika ([email protected]).

The positions are third-party funded research assistant posts (E13 TV-G-U, 100%) at Goethe University Frankfurt, fixed-term until December 31, 2029. The salary is according to the collective agreement for the public service of the state of Hesse (TV-G-U). The positions are fully funded, including salary and social benefits.
