About this position
The Nuclear Power Safety (NPS) Division at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, is seeking engaged postdoctoral researchers to join a project focused on nuclear power safety, specifically in the areas of in-vessel corium melt retention (IVMR) in small modular reactors (SMRs) of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) type, and ex-vessel melt-coolant interactions and melt spreading. This research is supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and aims to adapt and further develop conventional in-vessel retention (IVR) methodologies, previously used in medium- and large-power PWRs, for application in new SMR designs. The project’s goal is to demonstrate the potential efficiency of the IVMR strategy, which could significantly enhance SMR safety by preserving the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel, a critical safety barrier.
The position offers the opportunity to work at a leading technical university known for its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and international collaboration. Researchers will engage in both computational and experimental work in well-equipped laboratories, studying novel SMR concepts and collaborating with national and international organizations at the forefront of nuclear reactor safety research. The working environment is creative, dynamic, and supportive, with guidance available for relocation and settling in Sweden.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Power Safety, Engineering Mechanics, or a related field, with substantial experience in reactor thermal hydraulics, severe accident research, and safety analyses. Preferred candidates will have completed their PhD within the last three years, possess experience with thermal hydraulics or severe accident codes, and have hands-on laboratory experience. Strong communication, teamwork, and independent research skills are essential, as is a demonstrated motivation and dedication to research. Teaching experience and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, particularly gender equality, are considered advantages.
The appointment is full-time, temporary, and limited to a maximum of two years, with a monthly salary. The position is intended as a first career step after completing a dissertation. Security clearance may be required for certain roles, in accordance with Swedish law.
To apply, candidates must submit a complete application through KTH’s recruitment system, including a CV, copies of diplomas and grades (with translations if necessary), a brief research statement (maximum two pages), and contact details for 2-3 referees. The application deadline is November 17, 2025. For further information, contact Sevostian Bechta, Pär Olsson, Weimin Ma, or Andrei Komlev at the provided email addresses.
