About this position

The Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) in Krakow, Poland, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher (Adiunkt) position in the Department of Magnetic Materials and Nanostructures (NZ34), Division of Condensed Matter Physics. This full-time, fixed-term position (up to 33 months) focuses on cutting-edge research in the laser-assisted design, synthesis, modification, and characterization of functional composite materials, particularly polymer-based nanocomposites and coatings for biomedical and bio-related applications. Research topics include regenerative medicine, antibacterial/antiviral surfaces, and drug delivery platforms.

The successful candidate will engage in laser synthesis of functional nanoparticles and hybrid nanostructures using pulsed laser irradiation/ablation in liquids (PLIL/LAL), incorporation of nanomaterials into polymer matrices, and the design and synthesis of composite nanomaterials and biomaterials (including polymer/ceramic/graphene-based composites). The role also involves laser surface modification and functionalization of materials and polymer coatings to tailor biointerface properties and enhance antimicrobial/antibiofilm performance. Advanced structural and physicochemical characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman/FTIR, UV–Vis, DLS/zeta potential) will be employed to correlate structure–property–function relationships.

The position offers a competitive monthly gross salary (PLN 7,250 for PhD holders, PLN 8,050 for habilitated doctors), with possible additional benefits such as long-service awards, annual bonuses, and support from the Company Social Benefits Fund. The role is research-focused with no teaching obligations, and provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, computing infrastructure, and opportunities for collaboration with leading experts and research institutes.

Applicants must hold a PhD in physical sciences or related fields (chemistry, physical chemistry, material science), have a strong publication record, and demonstrate expertise in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and functional nanomaterials/composites for biological applications. Experience with advanced materials characterization, teamwork, and excellent English skills are required. Experience in polymer coatings, antimicrobial surfaces, proposal writing, and international collaboration is an asset.
