The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Physics invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Condensed Matter Theory, focusing on the dynamics of driven-dissipative heterostructures and quantum engineered systems. This research is jointly supervised by Assistant Professor Paolo Molignini and Professor Tero Heikkilä, leaders of the Quantum Simulation and Condensed Matter Theory groups. The position is funded by the Finnish Quantum Flagship and will begin as early as January 2, 2026, for a fixed term of two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year.
The successful candidate will investigate the interplay of topology, dissipation, and driving in engineered quantum systems. Research topics include non-equilibrium and Floquet topology, topological properties of density matrices and Liouvillians, non-Hermitian effects, and nonreciprocity in systems such as Josephson junctions and optomechanical platforms. Theoretical frameworks will involve open quantum systems described by Lindblad and Keldysh formalisms, complemented by numerical approaches such as exact diagonalization and tensor networks. Additional directions include studies of multi-terminal Josephson junctions, Andreev bound states with finite lifetimes, and links to quantum thermodynamics and driven-dissipative quantum heat machines.
The Condensed Matter Theory group, led by Professor Heikkilä, is renowned for expertise in non-equilibrium superconductivity, quantum materials, and Josephson electronics. The Quantum Simulation Theory group, led by Assistant Professor Molignini, explores quantum many-body systems, long-range and light-mediated interactions, and emergent quantum phenomena in ultracold atoms, molecules, and photonic devices. Both groups offer access to advanced computational facilities, including the university cluster and national scientific computing centre CSC.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in physics or a related field, with a thesis on a theoretical topic. Required skills include a strong foundation in condensed matter physics, quantum physics, and statistical mechanics. Experience with quantum master equations, Keldysh field theory, exact diagonalization, tensor network methods, and the theory of topological insulators and superconductors is considered an asset. High proficiency in English and excellent communication skills are essential. The PhD degree must be completed before the starting date. The salary for this position is approximately 3600-4800 €/month (gross), depending on qualifications and experience, with a settling-in allowance for relocation.
