Wageningen University & Research is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the interdisciplinary AquiCirc project, focusing on Integrated Modelling of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). This Water4All-funded initiative addresses global challenges in securing safe and sustainable groundwater resources within a circular water economy. The successful candidate will work at the interface of science, practice, and policy, collaborating with leading academic institutions, water authorities, and industry partners across Europe and Africa.
The position is embedded in the Soil Physics and Land Management (SLM) Group at Wageningen University, with close collaboration with the Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics Group and KWR Water Research Institute. The research will involve developing and applying integrated hydro(geo)logical and water-quality models, including surface water–groundwater and reactive transport models, to assess MAR performance, contaminant fate, and system optimization. Fieldwork at the Dutch MAR case study site will include groundwater level and water-quality measurements, with data synthesis and integration from international case study sites.
Key research areas include hydrogeology, nature-based solutions, contaminants of emerging concern, and circular water systems. The role involves scientific coordination, data integration, open science practices, and the development of transferable insights for optimizing MAR systems under diverse environmental conditions. The researcher will disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications, stakeholder workshops, and policy-relevant outputs, engaging with an international consortium spanning Belgium, Italy, Spain, South Africa, and Tunisia.
Applicants should have a PhD in Hydrogeology, Ecohydrology, Hydrology, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Hydroinformatics, or a closely related field, with strong skills in numerical modelling, hydrogeological field investigation, programming (Python, R, MATLAB), and scientific communication. Experience in hydrogeologic or reactive transport modelling and stakeholder engagement is highly valued. English proficiency at C1 level is required; Dutch is an asset.

Proven experience in hydrogeologic or reactive transport modelling (e.g., MODFLOW, FEFLOW, MT3D), water quality assessment, or field-based groundwater research is required. Strong programming/scripting and data analysis skills in Python, R, MATLAB, or a comparable language are necessary.
