About this position

University of Oulu is advertising a 3-year fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher position in remote sensing and hydrological/snow modelling at the Faculty of Technology, Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering.

The project focuses on changes and patterns in hydrology, snow, and microclimates across Arctic, boreal, and alpine ecosystems. The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced mechanistic and deep-learning models using Landsat, Sentinel, and PlanetScope satellite data, together with ERA5-Land reanalysis and microclimate datasets, to reconstruct historical trends and understand climate-change and human impacts on cold-climate ecosystems and biodiversity.

This postdoctoral role is linked to major research initiatives at the University of Oulu, including DIWA – Digital Waters and SAFIRE – Safeguarding Biodiversity through Interdisciplinary Research on Habitat Restoration, funded by the Research Council of Finland. The work is embedded in a strong water research environment with hydrological modelling, cold-climate hydrology, process studies, and groundwater research, and also connects to the Arctic, Antarctic and Mountain initiative.

Responsibilities include fine-scale snow and hydrological mapping and modelling, integrating satellite and microclimate observations, collaborating with ecologists and hydrologists, contributing to open-source tools, publishing high-quality research, and participating in doctoral supervision and education. Fieldwork in northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway may be possible depending on interest.

Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral degree in remote sensing, hydrology, data sciences, environmental science, ecosystem modelling, or a related field, completed by the deadline and no more than 10 years ago. Required strengths include independent research ability, teaching skills, strong numerical modelling and data analysis, programming experience (Python, R, Julia, Fortran, or C/C++), excellent English, teamwork, and scientific writing. Preferred experience includes satellite remote sensing, drone imagery, ecological restoration, HPC, supervision, international networking, and proposal writing.

The position is full time, temporary, and begins on 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary is based on Finnish university pay scales, with a typical monthly salary of EUR 3,700–4,800 before taxes.
