About this position

The Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) in Krakow, Poland, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher (Adjunct) position in the Department of Ultrarelativistic Nuclear Physics and Hadron Interactions (NZ23). This full-time, fixed-term position (up to 33 months) focuses on research related to the ALICE experiment at CERN, with a particular emphasis on ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the FoCal calorimeter, and the development of the ALICE3 Forward Detector.

The successful candidate will participate in the integration and commissioning of the FoCal calorimeter, analyze test data, and contribute to the development of the ALICE3 Forward Detector prototype. Responsibilities also include disseminating research results through publications in leading scientific journals and presentations at seminars and international conferences. The position is research-only, with no teaching obligations, and offers access to state-of-the-art facilities, including computer farms, cloud computing infrastructure, and collaboration with world-class experts.

Applicants must hold a PhD in physical sciences or a related discipline (chemistry, physical chemistry, or material science), have a strong publication record in prestigious international journals, and demonstrate expertise in high-energy nuclear physics, experimental data analysis, and scientific instrumentation. Teamwork skills and excellent English proficiency are required. Experience in detector construction, commissioning, and working with photomultipliers is highly desirable.

The position offers a competitive monthly gross salary (PLN 7,250 for PhD holders, PLN 8,050 for habilitated doctors), with additional benefits such as annual leave (36 days), long-service awards, annual bonuses, and support from the Company Social Benefits Fund. The contract is for up to 33 months, with IFJ PAN as the sole place of employment.

To apply, candidates must contact Prof. Marek Kowalski ([email protected]) early in the process and may be asked to deliver a seminar. Applications, including all required documents, should be sent by email to [email protected] by May 4th, 2026. Two referee recommendations must be sent directly by the referees to the same email address. The selection process includes document review and interviews (June 9–11, 2026), with final decisions communicated by June 22, 2026.
