Health monitoring and gait evaluation for osteoarthritis patients
This postdoctoral position at the University of Glasgow is part of the HEALTHCARE QUEST project, led by Prof Jonathan Cooper, Prof Aleksandra Vuckovic, and Dr Julien Le Kernec. The project addresses the challenge faced by osteoarthritis patients who experience long travel and wait times for essential mobility assessments, which can worsen their condition. The research focuses on developing and implementing a radar-based solution for objective, at-home gait monitoring, with deployments at the Golden Jubilee University National Hospital and the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will contribute to the clinical validation of this technology, aiming to improve patient prioritization for surgeries such as Total Knee Replacement and enhance care accessibility and outcomes.
The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in a broader initiative exploring the use of sensing technologies for in-home health monitoring. Responsibilities include data collection from volunteers and patients, working with various sensors (motion capture, radar, and others), and analyzing the resulting data in conjunction with survey and questionnaire responses related to pain and mobility. The role also involves contributing to research publications, grant applications, and the management of the project. The candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, participate in meetings and workshops, and may supervise or mentor junior researchers and students.
Applicants must have a strong background in biomedical engineering or a related field, with essential skills in sensor data capture, motion capture analysis, IT and data analysis, and scientific writing. For appointment at Grade 7, a PhD or equivalent experience is required, along with a track record of independent research and publications. Experience in gait analysis, clinical research, and the ability to deliver high-quality outputs is essential. The position requires membership in the PVG Scheme and a Research Passport, with pre-employment checks including occupational health.
The post is full-time, with funding secured until 31st August 2027, and offers a competitive salary at Grade 6/7 (£33,951 - £46,049 per annum). The University of Glasgow provides a supportive and inclusive work environment, with generous leave, pension benefits, and a commitment to staff wellbeing. Applications are particularly encouraged from underrepresented groups. The closing date for applications is 7 October 2025.
