Postdoctoral Researcher in Applied Philosophy – Biodiversity Monitoring and Management under Uncertainty

The University of Oslo invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in applied philosophy, focusing on biodiversity monitoring and management under uncertainty. This position is part of the interdisciplinary BioM project, which aims to develop scientifically robust and transparent decision-making systems for addressing the biodiversity crisis. BioM brings together expertise from ecology, statistics, and philosophy to improve the modeling and governance of biodiversity, integrating diverse and incomplete data sources and accounting for uncertainty in ways relevant to real-world management. The postdoctoral fellow will join a collaborative environment based at the Natural History Museum and work closely with the Department of Mathematics, Department of Biosciences, and the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas. The project also involves the Science and Democracy (SciDem) research group, led by Professor Cathrine Holst, and the Centre for Philosophy and the Sciences (CPS). The research will include philosophical analysis of evidence construction, ethical trade-offs, and the legitimization of scientific advice in policy contexts. This position is one of four simultaneous hires within BioM, including two PhD fellows in population ecology and statistics, and another postdoctoral fellow in spatial ecological modeling. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the philosophy department and contribute to interdisciplinary research that clarifies model assumptions, influences decision-making, and aligns scientific advice with societal goals. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in philosophy or a closely related field. Experience or interest in applied philosophy, philosophy of science, ethics, or interdisciplinary research involving environmental science, statistics, or ecology is desirable. Strong analytical and communication skills are expected. The position is full-time and temporary, with a contract of 37.5 hours per week. No specific language test or GPA requirements are mentioned. For more information and to apply, visit the JobbNorge portal at this link . The application deadline is 8 April 2026. Contact Professor Cathrine Holst ( [email protected] ) or Dr. Olav Skarpaas ( [email protected] ) for further information. The position is based in Oslo, Norway, at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas.
