Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Geochemistry, Mineral Synthesis, and Isotope Effects at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

A two-year postdoctoral position is available at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley. The research focuses on experimental geochemistry, specifically mineral synthesis and associated isotope effects. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to investigate mineral interfacial chemistry, element and isotope partitioning, crystal growth, dissolution, and phase transformation using state-of-the-art computational and experimental tools. The project involves designing, implementing, and analyzing aqueous chemostatic mineral-fluid reactions using autonomous and automated reactors in the Living Minerals Laboratory. The candidate will apply advanced techniques such as quantum sensing, isotopic methods, scanning probe microscopy, X-ray and electron imaging, spectroscopy, geochemical modeling, and molecular modeling to understand and control molecular processes driving mineral reactivity. The position is a joint appointment between LBNL and UC Berkeley, offering access to world-class analytical facilities including automated chemostats, advanced light sources, and isotope-ratio mass spectrometry systems. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, with demonstrated research experience in experimental geochemistry, aqueous reactions, and crystal growth. Strong communication skills and a record of timely publications are required. The position is full-time for two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding. The monthly salary range is $6,573 - $8,921, and the position is union-represented. Applications will be reviewed starting at the end of December 2025 and will remain open until filled. To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, contact information for three references, and PDFs of two top publications via the provided job link. For questions, contact Associate Professor Daniel Stolper at [email protected]. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in experimental geochemistry, mineral synthesis, isotope effects, and collaborative research in a leading scientific environment.
