Postdoctoral Researcher in Archaeology – Archaeometric Study of Balearic Limestone Burials
Ghent University invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral researcher position in Archaeology, focusing on an archaeometric study of Balearic limestone burials. The successful candidate will join a collaborative project with the AMGC research group at VUB, investigating the enigmatic funerary practices of the Balearic protohistoric community. The research centers on the analysis of cremated remains from limeburials and the isotope analysis of cremated bones, aiming to shed light on the mobility of island communities and their interactions with the Iberian mainland and the western Mediterranean basin.
The position is based in the Department of Archaeology at Ghent University, a leading institution with over 15,000 staff and a strong commitment to research and education across diverse academic fields. The project offers a unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, combining archaeological, archaeometric, and experimental approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with experts in funerary archaeology, stable isotope analysis, and experimental techniques such as FTIR.
Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate in Archaeology or Archaeometry and have experience in funerary archaeology. Knowledge of cremation archaeology, stable isotope analysis, FTIR, and experimental archaeology are considered assets. The position offers a competitive salary according to the PD1-PD4 scale, starting earliest 1 February 2026, and includes comprehensive staff benefits such as training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, a bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before 12 December 2025. Required documents include a CV, academic transcript, cover letter, diploma transcript (with translation if necessary), and a reference letter, all in PDF format. Late or email applications will not be accepted. Ghent University encourages applications from all qualified candidates, maintaining an equal opportunities and diversity policy.
