PhD Program in Epidemiology, Statistics, and Prevention Science at Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology, Germany

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS in Bremen, Germany, is inviting applications for its three-year PhD program in epidemiology, statistics, and prevention and implementation science, starting October 1, 2026. BIPS is a leading center for population-based research, dedicated to developing effective strategies for chronic disease prevention and supporting a healthy life course through cutting-edge epidemiological research. The institute is closely affiliated with the University of Bremen and is a member of the Leibniz Association, which comprises 96 German research institutes. The PhD program offers a unique opportunity to advance expertise in epidemiology, public health, and chronic disease prevention. Research areas include pharmacoepidemiology, cancer screening, prevention and implementation science, biostatistics, machine learning, data science, causal inference, and etiologic and molecular epidemiology. Faculty members such as Ulrike Haug, Hajo Zeeb, Daniela Fuhr, Iris Pigeot, Marvin Wright, Vanessa Didelez, Konrad Stopsack, and Krasimira Aleksandrova lead active research groups and provide mentorship to PhD students. PhD students will be matched with a senior faculty member based on their research interests and will join a collaborative research group. The program emphasizes both research and structured doctoral education, including seminars and advanced courses in epidemiology, prevention research, biostatistics, scientific writing, and good scientific practice. All coursework and research activities are conducted in English, and students are encouraged to participate in external courses and workshops. Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) qualifying for a PhD in relevant fields, or be expected to complete such a degree by October 1, 2026. Prior research experience is advantageous. There are no citizenship restrictions, but non-EU students must obtain a visa and work authorization. Degrees from outside Germany must be recognized by the University of Bremen or KMK. Standardized English language test results are required. Severely disabled applicants are given priority if equally qualified. The PhD position is fully funded for three years, with a salary of approximately €3,240 gross (€2,100 net) per month at 70% of a TV-L E13 position. There are no tuition fees, and students receive benefits such as health insurance and social security. Housing costs are the responsibility of the student, with expected rent between €500 and €900 per month. Graduates of the program have pursued successful careers in academia, public sector, and industry, with many continuing to postdoctoral and leadership positions.
