Biofilm detection and antimicrobial strategies

Two fully funded PhD positions are available jointly at the University of Strathclyde and University of Glasgow, focusing on cutting-edge research in biofilm profiling and antifungal drug development. The first project, led by Dr Karen Faulds and Dr Jason Brown, aims to develop sensitive, multiplexed tests for detecting bacteria and fungi in wound biofilms using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and bionanosensor technology. The student will gain expertise in Raman spectroscopy, microbiology, molecular biology, and microscopy, working across both institutions. The second project, led by Dr Fraser Scott and Dr Jason Brown, investigates the clinical impact of novel antifungal compounds (Strathclyde Minor Groove Binders) on biofilms, addressing the urgent need for new antifungal therapies due to rising resistance. This multidisciplinary project combines infection biology, synthetic organic chemistry, drug design, and advanced analytical techniques such as Biomolecular NMR and mass spectrometry. Both projects offer training in transferable skills and opportunities to collaborate with industry. Applicants should have a strong background in biology, chemistry, or related fields and be motivated to work in multidisciplinary teams.
