PhD Research & Teaching Assistantships in Political Science at Université libre de Bruxelles

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels, Belgium, is offering two full-time Research & Teaching Assistant positions in Political Science. These roles are ideal for candidates interested in pursuing a PhD while gaining teaching experience in a dynamic, multicultural academic environment. ULB is renowned for its international collaboration, diversity, and academic excellence, with a third of its students and researchers coming from abroad. The positions are based in the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences and involve a balanced workload: 50% teaching (at Bachelor and Master levels) and 50% PhD research. Successful candidates will conduct a PhD dissertation in political science and participate in research activities within one of ULB’s political science research units, such as CTP, CEVIPOL, REPI, or CEPAP. Teaching responsibilities include leading seminars, exercise groups, supervision, grading, and contributing to administrative duties like study fairs and exam coordination. Applicants must have a Master’s degree (120 credits) in Political Science or an equivalent field. Essential skills include strong research and writing abilities, demonstrated through a Master’s thesis or PhD project proposal, pedagogical competence, and oral communication skills. Candidates must be able to teach in both French and English at a B2 proficiency level and work effectively in teams. Additional knowledge of political theory, comparative politics, political sociology, international relations, and research methods is desirable. Candidates who already hold a PhD are not eligible. The initial contract is for two years, renewable twice for a maximum of six years. The position offers PhD supervision and mentorship in a supportive, international academic setting. ULB is committed to diversity and inclusion, providing equal opportunities regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, beliefs, or disability. Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities. To apply, candidates must submit a CV, application letter, a 4-page PhD research project, and two letters of reference using the ULB application template. Applications must be submitted via the ULB Job Portal. Incomplete applications or those not using the template will not be considered. For further information, applicants can contact Julien Jeandesboz, Chair of Political Science, at [email protected]. For disability accommodations, contact Marie Botty at [email protected].
