PhD Student in Cybersecurity for IT/OT Critical Infrastructure in Total Defense Environments
Luleå University of Technology, a leading institution in the Arctic region, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join its Cybersecurity group within the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering. The university is renowned for its innovative education and ground-breaking research, collaborating closely with industry, public actors, and other universities. This position is part of a major interdisciplinary regional development project in total defense, starting in 2026, aimed at strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties.
The research focuses on developing and verifying a cybersecurity framework for environments where IT and OT systems converge, such as energy supply, water treatment, healthcare, and industry. The project addresses the unique challenges of securing these systems against cyberattacks, sabotage, and disruptions, especially in crisis and war situations. Key tasks include conducting literature studies on IT/OT security methods and frameworks, analyzing vulnerabilities and threat scenarios, collaborating with total defense actors and industry partners for requirements analysis, developing customized frameworks for risk management, incident response, and secure communication, and testing solutions in simulated or real environments.
As a doctoral student, you will engage in both theoretical and practical research, publish scientific articles, participate in conferences, and undertake doctoral courses. There is also an opportunity to gain teaching experience. The position offers a unique chance to contribute to applied, needs-driven research with significant societal impact, and to work as a neutral party in challenging development projects.
Applicants must have a master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field, with strong proficiency in security mechanisms, methods, models, and frameworks for IT and OT environments. The university encourages female applicants to apply, as the Cybersecurity group is currently male-dominated. Employment is for four years, with possible extension for teaching and departmental duties up to 20%. The position is based in Skellefteå, and may require travel and security clearance.
To apply, submit your CV, personal letter, and verified diplomas from high school and university, written in English or Swedish, via the online application portal. Mark your application with reference number 6691-2025. The application deadline is 6 January 2026. For further information, contact Professor and Division Manager Kåre Synnes ([email protected]) or Professor and Head of Subject Karl Andersson ([email protected]).
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the future of cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and total defense, in a dynamic and growing research environment at Luleå University of Technology.
