Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Study of Religion (RADHEART Project, Ancient Christianity)
The University of Bergen invites applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the Study of Religion, focusing on strong individual commitment in ancient forms of Christianity. This position is part of the RADHEART project (Radical Habits of the Heart: Emotions, Embodiment, and Strong, Individual Commitment in Ancient Religions), an ERC Consolidator Grant led by Professor Laura Feldt. The successful candidate will join the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion, contributing to the NARRATIVE work-package and engaging with a vibrant research group dedicated to the study of radical ancient religion.
The RADHEART project investigates the role of emotions and embodiment in fostering strong religious commitments in Jewish and Christian traditions from the 6th century BC to the 6th century CE. The project employs innovative theoretical frameworks, combining the aesthetics of religion, experience-oriented anthropology, and forward-oriented philology. The postdoctoral fellow will develop and execute an independent research project on early Christian ascetic and monastic literature, contributing to the project's overall goals and collaborating closely with the PI, Professor Laura Feldt, and the research team.
Key responsibilities include publishing scientific works, presenting research at conferences, organizing and participating in project events, and co-editing a scholarly anthology. The position is designed to help the fellow build a research profile suitable for future academic appointments, such as associate professor roles. The successful applicant will benefit from a stimulating work environment, opportunities for professional networking, and support for career development.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in the study of religion, history of religion, religious studies, or a closely related field. Required qualifications include demonstrated expertise in ancient Christian studies, proficiency in Greek and/or Latin, and a strong interest in comparative religious studies. Additional advantages include experience with asceticism/monasticism and relevant academic outputs. Proficiency in written and spoken English, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and submission of a project proposal aligned with the RADHEART project are essential.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 657,000, with further increases based on seniority, and enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which includes occupational pension, disability, and survivor benefits, as well as access to housing loans. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to have their daily workplace at the University of Bergen and comply with institutional guidelines.
Applications must be submitted electronically via the provided link, including a cover letter, CV, list of publications, language skills, at least two referees, a detailed project proposal, transcripts, documentation of PhD submission, a summary of the PhD thesis, up to five academic works, and relevant certificates. All documents should be in Norwegian, another Scandinavian language, or English, and uploaded in Word or PDF format before the deadline of 6 March 2026.
