PhD Position in Hydrometallurgical Extraction of Lithium for Battery Materials
Luleå University of Technology is a rapidly growing institution with world-leading expertise in several research areas, offering a dynamic environment for scientific and artistic research and education. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering is seeking a motivated doctoral student to join the Process Metallurgy group, focusing on the hydrometallurgical extraction of lithium from both primary and secondary raw materials. This research aims to produce active battery material and is part of the 'Li-PURE' project, funded by the Centre of Advance Mining and Metallurgy Critical Raw Material (CAMM-CRM).
The doctoral project centers on developing and demonstrating an integrated, resource-efficient extraction method for lithium, with particular emphasis on separation and purification processes. The research will address lithium recovery from primary sources and secondary materials, such as spent lithium iron phosphate batteries. The goal is to create process solutions capable of producing battery-grade lithium salts and enhancing the value of by-products, especially phosphorus. The project utilizes a combination of hydrometallurgical separation techniques, including selective precipitation, ion exchange, electrodialysis, and crystallization, arranged in flexible process flow schemes.
As a PhD student, you will conduct both experimental and theoretical work, present your findings at national and international conferences, and publish in scientific journals. Most of your time will be dedicated to your research studies, with opportunities to gain teaching experience. The position offers a unique chance to participate in challenging development projects and collaborate with industry and academia.
Applicants must have a Master's degree in metallurgy, chemical engineering, process engineering, chemistry, or a closely related field. Strong oral and written English skills are required. Ideal candidates are thorough, logical, and possess strong problem-solving and collaborative abilities. The position is a four-year employment, with possible teaching duties up to 20%. Placement is in Luleå, Sweden, with a start date of 2026-09-01 or as agreed.
To apply, submit your CV, personal letter, and verified diplomas from high school and universities via the online application link. Mark your application with reference number 2032-2026. Applications must be written in English or Swedish. The deadline for applications is 19 March 2026.
